And Surrounding Area.

Indeed, towns and cities are essential. Here is where you arrive by plane, train, ship or bus. But don’t overlook/skip the area around the city. You can miss critical must-see sites doing this.

One day in any city is at best, a trip to the buffet. A taste of this or that but no real time to dig into something.

Would you go to Beijing and not leave the city? The Great Wall is not in the city; you would miss that. Well then, I will spend my one day at the Great Wall. And skip the Forbidden City?

That’s why it is so important to not only look at a city but at its surroundings. Ephesus, Stonehenge, Angkor Wat, Delphi, Versailles, these are all “outside the city” (although some cities have now grown out to them).

So maybe you think you can see Rome in two days. I don’t think you can. Glimpse, get a taste, yes, but actually “experience”? Not really. You will also need to cut out Tivoli, Hadrian’s Villa, the Aqueduct Park, Appian Way, and Osta Antica to have time to see some of Rome.

Could you go to Nice France and not want to visit nearby Monte Carlo or Cannes?

San Francisco, without visiting the wine country or Orlando without visiting one nearby theme park?

What about flying all the way to Sydney Australia and skipping the rest of the continent? I know people who have done it.

Get the WHOLE picture and plan accordingly. You will be richer.
