See Greece, and You Decide.
It has so much to offer. The mainland has snow-covered mountains for skiing in the winter to beaches for swimming in the summer.
The Peloponnese has incredible archeological sites with half the crowds of the ones in Athens. You can also find great spas and wineries here.
The Greek Islands offer over-the-top getaways for jet-setters. At the other extreme, islands where the only transportation is by foot or donkey.
You cannot see Greece or Athens in a few days. You might get more out of a Greek restaurant back home with “Visit Athens” posters on the walls.
WORSE CASE, focus on two-three cities and immerse yourself for seven days. A little better, add an extra weekend on and give yourself ten days.
People say, oh, but I am going to go back again. If you already know this, why try to cram so much into the first visit?
I suggest and find most people are happy with doing one of three sections per trip. More specifically, Northern, Central, and/or Peloponesse, and the islands.
Fly into Thessaloniki and out of Athens. Trust me; there is enough to do between these two cities in seven days. And that’s without adding anywhere west, north, or east.
Fly in/out of Athens and immerse yourself in the city’s must-see sites.
The Acropolis is home to eight UNESCO sites alone. There are incredible museums and the wonderful Plaka to get lost in.
From Thessaloniki, you have the city itself, the culinary capital of Greece, and too many UNESCO sites.
Peloponesse is another world of UNESCO sites, lost cities, and more wine regions. It can take a week to see properly.
Then there are the islands. Everyone is unique and worth seeing.
Day Trips
For day trips you have Delphi, Sounion, Corinth, and Mycenae.
From Thessaloniki, you have the stomping grounds of Alexander the Great and his father. And several of Greece’s wine regions nearby.
And what about the 18 UNESCO sites in Greece?
Do you start to get the picture? Greece has so much to offer, don’t skimp. What will be your favorite memory?
