As you can see, Folegandros does not suffer from the crowding that many cruise ports encounter.

Charming squares, casual hikes, swimming, and Greek hospitality pretty much sum it up.

There are no airports, cruise ships, or large touring buses.

So, kick back and let the magic powers of this oasis work on you. It just might be what you’ve been looking for.

Karavostasis is the location for the ferry port.

You can see Folegandros is different from the minute you arrive.
The port has only the essentials.

 

As you can see, Folegandros beaches are basic as well.
Livadi Beach is near town.

 

There are no massive resorts, yet.
Just out of town, there is a lot of open space. And a local on a mule.

Karavostasis has a few nice guest houses but seems to cater to the backpacker looking for cheap accommodations. There is also a campground not too far away.

See Folegandros (Chora) Town

Folegandros or Chora is the main town on the island.

Here, you will find most of the island’s residents, accommodations, and plenty of tavernas.

See Folegandros town, I think one of the prettiest in Greece.The town sits on the edge of a dramatic cliff.

 

You can sit here and watch and listen to everyone go by.
There are several small squares.

 

The pace of the day slows down even more.
At sunset, the squares take on a different feeling.

 

You will see everyone in Folegandros before you finish.
Everyone goes out for dinner.

 

Try to see it from a distance at night.
The Chora is scenic, night or day.

 

Folegandros Castro

The Castro (Kastro) is the oldest part of the town. Once a castle (Castro), you can still get the feel of olden times.

From the thick walls, you can see this was a safe place.
There are still only a few entrances to the Kastro.

Since all the houses are white, some people use different colors for the trim.

Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary)

The church sits above the town on an ancient Greek temple site. Some of the church’s marble decorations are probably from the previous temple.

The views are worth the climb. You can see most of Folegandros from the terrace.

You can see from the north end to the south.

You want to start down soon after sunset as the path is not that well lit.
It makes a good landmark, even at night.

 

Ano Meria

On the narrow northern end of the island is this charming little village I hope never gets too modern.

They are near the central area of this spread out village.

Some signs have no indication if something is left or right.
Be ready to ask for directions as signage is kept to a minimum.

 

The blue domes are on most Cycladic islands.
Ano Meria has numerous churches.

There is a folkloric museum in Ano Meria. Outside of that, the sites to see are the villages themselves. Take half a day to meander.

There are plenty of dirt trails to wander and sparkling blue water for cooling down,

There is nothing on the beach, but tavernas and public restrooms are nearby.
Agkali Beach is as close to a full-service beach as you will find.

 

There is not a large variety of sea life, but the clear water makes viewing easy.
The water is crystal clear. Snorkeling is popular.

 

Beaches you cannot drive directly to, often have clothing optional sections.
Livadaki beach requires a good hike or a boat to reach.

Most paths have some signage, usually homemade.
Take a walk or go on a hike.

 

Shade is at a premium so take extra water.
If you go down the path, you have to come back up.

 

Just before sunset, or early morning are the best times for avoiding the blazing sun.
And if you climb up to the church, it is all downhill on the way back.

See Folegandros Summary

As you can see, Folegandros is a little jewel, just off the mainline to Santorini.

It’s a place where you can really unwind.

Due to the lack of water, there are very few farms. Livestock is predominantly goats and a mule or two.

There is no winery, but there is plenty to eat and drink on Folegandros.

Traditional Greek dishes are on every menu.

There are many places on the island for great sunrises and sunsets.
