TASTE HYDRA

BACK TO HYDRA

Table of Table of Contents:
TASTE
HOSPITALITY

TASTE GREECE.

Wines of Greece.                              Greek Beer.                              Greek Spirits.

Food tastes better on Hydra.
Hydra sunset, wine, and cuisine. A perfect ending.

Hydra does not have one “famous” dish that sets it apart from other Greek destinations.

You can find traditional dishes at most tavernas, and indeed, local seafood is a significant player. Many of the restaurants do their fishing in the morning using their boat.

Catching your own fish guarantees freshness.
Many Taverna owners are fishermen in the morning.

Therefore, there is not one taste Hydra offers. There are hundreds.  Throw in the setting. Many are by or within view of the water. And there’s the friendly hospitality of the local people. It would be hard to have a bad meal on Hydra.

Taste Hydra.

Taste Hydra and its fresh vegetables. They are a big part of the cuisine.
Fresh courgette (type of zucchini) fritters.

Similar to farm to table, the seafood has no detours to your plate except the kitchen.
This morning’s catch is tonight’s calamari.

A great way to taste Hydra is to do a progressive meal. I often start with sundowners and meze in Kamini.

Cats are part of the Greek landscape. On Hydra, they have a diet heavy with fish.
You never know who will sit down next to you.

Stop for another small plate somewhere along the walk back to Hydra. I usually sit at the bar for this.

Just about everywhere you walk, there is a cafe or taverna nearby.
A walk sure can work up an appetite.

Then have my entree somewhere in town.

Another option is to walk to the top of the town and work your way back to the port. It sure beats walking uphill after dinner.

Even when I am a party of one, I never seem to eat alone.
Did someone say fish?

If you only have a short time on the island, this will give you several experiences. I seem to have dinner guests wherever I go. I always travel with a ziplock bag of local cat food and one with dog treats from the local market.

Taste Hydra Hospitality

Although you cannot bottle it and sell it in a spice store, the local hospitality makes a meal taste better.

Once the day-tourists go away and the island calms down, it shows. It almost borders on too much service as they check to make sure you have everything you need.

I am not saying it is fast service. On Hydra, you don’t want anything to go fast.

The hospitality blends right into this pace.

A greek dinner without bread or wine is unheard of. Taste Hydra.
Fresh bread and local wine. So simple. Soo divine.

Hydra has many places to eat for such a small island.
Sunset on Hydra means it’s time for a tasteful evening.
