Juneau Alaska

Although you do not go to Juneau for the town itself, there are still things to see there.

Although it covers a lot of ground, Juneau is not a big city. There is still a lot of small-town charm about this capital of Alaska.

So plan a little time to explore Juneau, its way of life, and its citizens.

Come, let’s see Juneau.

With a mountain right behind it, you can see Juneau has a slight space problem.

See Juneau the Town

The commercial part of the town looks like a lollypop from above. A round central business area with the pier area a straight narrow bit of land underneath.

You can see Juneau takes its tides seriously. There is a 16 foot rise and fall twice daily.
Mount Juneau rises behind the town.

It gets very congested when 10,000 or more cruise guests cram into this one street.
Franklin is one of the main downtown streets.

The Alaskan Hotel has worn many hats.
The town holds on to some of its gold rush history.

The onion dome on the top represents a candle.
Its Russian history.

Tlingit and Auke tribes were here hundreds of years before the Russians. See Juneau history.
And certainly its first inhabitants.

See the Valley

The valley is a better place to see lakes, rivers, mountains, glaciers, and potential wildlife.

Black bears seem to be less afraid of urban areas than the brown bear.
Along with the brown bear, black bears inhabit southeast Alaska.

Play on a glacier

A path will take you very close to the falls. See Juneau for its scenery.
Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls.
As the ice moves, cracks form.
An ice crevice can be a little scary up close.

The two plus hour hike is just the beginning of the difficulty reaching the ice caves.

Until you look down on them, their size is misleading.

Most of the First Native history is told verbatim, with totems used as "note cards".
Each symbol represents a chapter in the story.

There are hiking trails, kayaking, canoeing, some minor white water rafting, biking, and other valley activities.

Auke Bay

To be up close to a whale is one of life's "neat" experiences.See Juneau wildlife.

Walk on a glacier once.
The mighty Taku Glacier is impressive.

It is also one of many places that offers a salmon grill.
Taku Lodge, looking towards the glacier of the same name, is a historical building.

You can see Juneau and a whole lot more from Mount Roberts on a clear day
Hiking paths, like this one on Mount Roberts, will get you closer to nature.

See Juneau Summary

Whether you come in the summer or winter, there is plenty to do in Juneau. Wildlife sightings are not as numerous in the winter, but neither are cruise ships.

The area takes on a winter wonderland appearance.

Skiing and snowmobiles replace kayaks and canoes.

I love exploring places in the offseason. You can really get a feel for the destination and its people.

Flights arrive daily from Seattle, Anchorage and other major cities.
Cruise ships and float planes arrive downtown. There is also an airport in the valley. See Juneau.

Whether you arrive by water or air, Juneau is a great place to explore.
