SEE KATAKOLO and PYRGOS

BACK TO KATAKOLO and PYRGOS

Table of Contents:
SEE KATAKOLO TOWN.
NEARBY KATAKOLO
SEE PYRGOS.

See Katakolo and Pyrgos. The protected bay has been welcoming sea goers since ancient times. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and others have made the Elis Region in the northwest corner of the Peloponnese their home.

Fortunately, most of them will be off on tour buses upon arrival. Then you can see Katakolo.
Cruise ships overwhelm the small port of Katakolo.

Today, the majority of visitors by land are Greeks. They are looking to get away from the larger cities of the Peloponnese and the Greek mainland.

By water, the majority are non-Greeks, racing from their cruise ship to get a glimpse of nearby Olympia. By 6:00 PM, they leave with no knowledge of this charming area.

The pace is slower here, once the ships leave. Sip some local wine, watch a Greek sunset, and savor some local seafood.

Come, let’s See Katakolo, Pyrgos, and all their wonders.

See Katakolo

The port town has a fascinating museum which you would not expect. There are nearby beach tavernas. For me, it comes alive an hour before sunset.

There are restaurants along the waterfront where you can see Katakolo walk by. There are shops on the main street, and homes on the back street.
The town is three blocks deep and only a few blocks long.

Stop for a coffee, some meze or a Greek meal.
The waterfront has numerous tavernas for eating, drinking, and people watching.

This is not a white sand beach, but its nice to have a meal next to or watch a sunset.
The beach at Agios Andreas (St Andrews).

From Ag Andreas, the sunsets are almost non-obstructed. After one, you will see Katakolo is a great stress reliever.
Ilia (Elis) region sunset

A day out exploring. Returning around 5:00 PM when the mobs are walking back to their soon departing cruise ships.

A local wine, a local sunset, and then fresh seafood or local pork for dinner. Heaven.

See Pyrgos.

The capital of the Elis region has many things to see, including an interesting museum.

What is a Greek town without several churches? This one, like many, dates from after WWII.
Agia Kyriaki at Pyrgos.

The church has some lovely marble inlay. Views over the town are available from one side of the square outside.
Agios Nicholas church is on the main square.

There is some pre WWII architecture still around. There is also architecture from award-winning architects. See Katakolo, but save time for pyrgos.
Old houses in Pyrgos. For people who like pictures of old doors and windows, this town has many.
