BACK TO IOANNINA

Table of Contents:
SEE IOANNINA ACROPOLIS.
IOANNINA TOWN.
NEARBY IOANNINA

You will see Ioannina does not have as many touristy things as some Greek cities.
Ioannina is a Greek city with traditional architecture, cuisine, and people.

What do you know about the largest city in Epirus? As you will see, Ioannina has a history, cuisine, and natural beauty to share.

And right now, you can be one of a small group of Americans who knows anything about Ioannina.

So, put on your walking shoes as we have a whole new view of Greece to take in. Come, let’s see Ioannina.

See Ioannina Acropolis

The acropolis is a little misleading. In Greece, people think of the one in Athen’s towering high over the city.

The one in Ioannina is not as tall, but it is the highest point (acro) in the city (polis).

It was high enough to keep most invaders on the outside.

One of many gates to the castle (acropolis) area.

As you will see, Ioannina's defenses would be hard to breach.
The city walls and acropolis height keep most enemies at bay.

The Germans used heavy bombing to get the city to surrender.

Inside you can see Ioannina's silver history.
The silversmithing museum takes up part of the castle ramparts.

Unfortunately, there is very little to see.
The remain s of the Pasha’s house date from the Ottoman period.

It is a treasure as most things Ottoman soon disappeared after their exit.
Another remnant of the Ottoman occupation is the Fethiye Mosque.

His headless body and that of one of his wives is buried here.
The Tomb of Ali Pasha.

The acropolis castle area is home to other Ottoman remains as well as the Byzantine Museum.

Walking is over uneven stone paths with some stairs. It is worth walking.

There are several good viewing points over the lake and the mountains in the distance.

See the Rest of Ioannina.

Just outside the walls, there is a lovely lakeside promenade and green area with trees. It makes a great walking spot day or evening.

Here, you can also find cafes and ferries to a nearby island.
The Ioannina waterfront.

Just outside the main gate of the castle is what was the Jewish quarter and some small museums.

Other sites probably require a car.

Thanks to the Germans for not leveling everything, there is still some interesting architecture.
Out of nowhere, you come across Ottoman architecture.

Wandering the quarters can be a rewarding expedition.

Lake Pamvotis Ioannina

The lake serves as a source of water, fish, and recreation.

On the far side of the lake is an island you can visit. There is a museum to Ali Pasha and several monasteries.

Or just go for a boat ride and enjoy the scenery.

You can see the island from the city.

See Ioannina and its surroundings.
The Kalogeriko bridge is one of many still standing in Epirus.

National Park of Tzoumerka, Peristeri, Arachthos Gorge & Acheloos Valley – is southeast of Ioannina. The name is not that easy to say, but it is worth your time to visit.

Its main purpose is the preservation of natural, historical, and cultural heritage.

As you can see, Ioannina has a lot of pretty scenery around.

Some require a walk to reach, while others are in towns.
Epirus has an abundance of old bridges.

The cave of Perama is not far from town. Here thousands of rock formations create a visual treat.
