See Delos and its ancient treasures.
The Temple of Isis at Delos.

See Delos, one of the important sites of ancient Greece.

Dating to at least 3200 B.C., it has seen the Minoans, followers of Theos Patroos, and a cult center.

This history happens before the Romans, Persians, and Spartans.

Come, let’s see Delos and look back into ancient Greece through its sites and history.

See Ancient Delos

The reason people come to the island is for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delos.

That is the only attraction on the island, and it is enough.

You qill see Delos homes get their name from the mosaic in the courtyard.
A mosaic of Dionysos riding a lion.

We could learn from the Greeks. Covered sidewalks are practical in many types of weather.
To the left of the pillars was a covered sidewalk. The street is to the right.

You will see Delos often has sea breezes making the house design brilliant.
There are no yards around houses but a courtyard in the middle letting in air and light.

One of the wealthier homes on Delos.
House of Masks

It is free standing on a larger piece of land.
House of the Dolphins is above the theater.

The Italians (Romans) take over the island.
Agora of the Italians is near the original approach to the sanctuary.

As the island becomes more commercial, a larger market area is needed.
Agora of the Competaliasts is closer to the harbors.

Keeping the citizens happy was important in early days.
The large theater accommodates 5,500 people.

A lack of water and soil to grow food limit Delos.
A system of cisterns and underground aqueducts provides water.

Cult Center

Before becoming a commercial port, Delos serves as a sanctuary, and then a cult center for Apollo.

The Greeks take this very seriously as it is big money.

You cann see Delos lions in the museum.
At one time, sixteen lions were protecting the sacred way.

Isis was sharing her sanctuary with Anubis, and Serapis,.
Everyone gets a temple: Isis.

Many neighborhood clubs have several small temples in their clubhouses.
Poseidon shares with Hercules.

You will see Delos has temples of all shapes and sizes.
Hera, the wife of Zeus, gets her own.

Although Artimus is also born here, you will see Delos likes Apollo better.
All that remains of the Temple of Apollon, once the most important on the island.

Are these the only sites on the island? Hardly.

Hopefully, they are enough to give you an idea of why you want to see Delos.

The museum has a nice but small collection of items from the excavations.

See Delos’ Neighbors.

You need to choose at least one as you cannot stay on Delos. You will see Delos has no hotels, cafes, or even a beach club.

Public ferries run daily from Mykonos.

Naxos and Poros have tour offerings with included transportation.

Mykonos offers a getaway for the jet-set.

Pricey luxury hotels, international cuisine, and high-class beach clubs draw visitors from all over.

A secret, most of the Cycladic islands have this paint scheme.
Mykonos, famous for its white buildings with bright trim.

Naxos has some history to explore, excellent cuisine, and more family-oriented beaches. It is a destination for Greek locals instead of international visitors.

You can walk to several small excavations from the ferry pier.
Naxos town has history right underneath.

Paros is a mini-version of both. Naoussa has the clubs for the younger and great restaurants for the older.

Think Mykonos except not quite as expensive or crowded, except in August.
Naoussa offers charm, cuisine, and nightclubs.

Wine, historic sites, and beaches make it popular with Greeks and visitors to Greece.

See Delos Summary

As you can see, Delos and this corner of the Cycladic islands has something for just about everyone.

And make sure to sample the local cuisine and local wine.

Come, see Delos and discover the islands for yourself.
